Telefon karten funktionieren gleich wie bei uns und die meisten öffentlichen Telefone sind dafür ausgerüstet. Telefonkarten sind z. T. in Geschäfte wie Pick'n Pay und auch bei jeder Post erhältlich und es gibt sie für 20 Rand, 50 Rand 100 Rand und 200 Rand. Wer sein eigenes Handy einführt, kann eine passende Simkarte kaufen. Wer sein D1 D2 Handy mitbringt , kann direkt nach hause telefonieren , denn die Netz betreiber haben mit lokalen Anbietern wie Vodacom ein Roaming abkommen geschlossen. Vorsicht in Hotels werden z.T. der 2- bis 3 fache Posttarif verrechnet.

The telephone system in South Africa is much the same as the European standard. Most of the public telephpnes accept phone cards and it is the cheapest method of making international phone calls. Phone cards can be purchased from places such as Pick 'n Pay, Garages and your local Post Office in dominiations of R 20, R 50, R 100 and R 200. Your handy, cell phone or mobile sim card can be replaced with a local service provider's sim and air time can be purchased in much the same way as phone cards. Most cell phone providers such as Vodocom in South Africa now provide international roaming. It is best not to make calls from your hotel room as the costs can be three to four times more expensive.
